Team 3!!!!!!!

TrĂšs excited to be in Team 3…those of you who know what I’m talking about will know why I’m so excited. 😉 Excited to finally truly begin the last year too……….lectures totally didn’t count lol.

Went to Noren last night with a friend, and gave him the signed Joe Bonamassa CD I got for him. 🙂 It makes me happy to make others happy. Unfortunately I only brought my prime lenses which didn’t focus very well on the totemo oishii pork rice I had…so no photos. It was SOOOOO good though. And I had deep fried cheese. OMG like just hearing DEEP FRIED CHEESE makes you want to eat it, right? Will return…

This tart from Arome Bakery describes how I feel about being in Team 3. Hee hee. It was nothing special in terms of taste, but at least the tart crust wasn’t too soggy, and the centre was like American Cheesecake and not gelatinzed.  And to my dismay, the cute face on top was just a plastic sheet. Cute, nevertheless. Very expensive at $12 and the size of an eggtart though.

Arome Bakery also has a series of roll cakes which they claim to be made with Hokkaido 3.6 milk. I chose this Black Sesame Charcoal Roll because the contrast of white and black made it look very striking. For those of you who are raising your eyebrows at the word “charcoal”….rest assured that it doesn’t taste burnt or charcoally at all. In fact, charcoal is a trendy ingredient in Asia reputed for its detox properties. Honestly though, I think it just makes food look really cool because it’s SO black.

Charcoal is actually tasteless, so what I tasted was just the sesame, which was quite strong. The sesame also made it grainy in texture. However, the cake was soft and moist, and was not like the more buttery and eggy Chinese type of swiss roll, rather more like the Japanese kind of soft roll cake. The cream was abundant and milky, and was real cream, instead of the buttercream found in Chinese rolls. I like this kind of cream a lot more as it’s fresher tasting and not as heavy (tastewise…I’m sure  fat-wise it’s still heavy haha). Also within the cream were 2 blocks of sesame jelly which tasted like Chinese ji ma go (traditional sesame dessert pudding).

Sometimes, inexpensive chainstore Asian bakeries churn out good things too. 🙂

Been sick for the past week with a terrible cough…ugh……hope I get better before clinical attachment starts!!

The End…For Now

So here I am, on my last day of my stay in Paris. My flight’s at 1 pm tomorrow, and I still haven’t packed at ALL. :S FML….like yesterday, I spent the whole day at the hospital doing surgery. Also said all my goodbyes to the nurses at the clinic, to the interns, the doctors I met, the OT nurses, the professor, secretaries. Delivered my Berko cupcakes to the clinic nurses which were well received. Took lots of photos, wanted to cry. Sigh…I hate goodbyes. I’LL BE BACK, PARIS AND HOPITAL SAINT-LOUIS!

After that, went to the Grands Magasins (again) to get more souvenirs (again). I finished off the macarons I bought which were supposed to be smuggled back to HK for my family and me…….whoops. So I bought more. And bought extra so I wouldn’t have to steal from the boxes. I wasn’t really in an eating mood (surprising, eh?) tonight as I was feeling so sad. 😩

So I got something from Starbucks. Cheesecake from Starbucks. What was I thinking?? Well…Berko was closed by the time I got back to the Beaubourg area, so I couldn’t end my trip with an amazing piece of Berko cheesecake. Yes, I was very, very sad. This Framboise-Chocolat Blanc GĂąteau Fromage was so bad I didn’t even finish it. For one, the texture is all wrong. I think gelatin was used, which makes it a bit-jelly like. Not as bad as the Hong Kong style cheesecakes, but definitely not creamy like cheesecakes are supposed to be. Also, I couldn’t taste any white chocolate OR raspberry. Starbucks fail.

Also bought a bunch of stuff from the gourmet deli near my home, including this interesting pudding made of ewe’s milk (brebis). I was expecting a stronger, more gamey taste. Unfortunately, it only tasted like a very smooth chocolate pudding. It was the texture of warm ginger milk pudding…just at the border of liquid and solid. Actually, I think even HK style milk pudding has a stronger gamey taste than this.

This was something else I bought from the deli (yes I went crazy…it’s my last day after all). Chestnut flavoured fromage blanc isn’t something very common in HK, but I’ve seen it everywhere in Paris. Actually…getting this was a stupid idea…since it seems pretty easy to make myself. Good nonetheless. I’ve grown to really like fromage blanc…the texture is smoother than yogurt (which I find more watery), and the tartness isn’t overwhelming. It’s also usually made with skim milk!

Second to Last Day Sigh

Today, when I got to the hospital, I found out that most of the interns from other places had left Paris already! :(:( If I had known, I would’ve stayed longer yesterday. Also, I missed a house party one of the interns from Marseilles was throwing……and now they’ve all left. My favourite intern from Algeria was still here and leaving the same day as I was though, so that’s a consolation.

Since it’s my last 2 days in Paris, I’m staying at the hospital for the whole day until they finish. I also needed to scramble to get souvenirs for people back in Hong Kong and also gifts for those at the hospital. So today, after school, I headed to Berko first to get a dozen of cupcakes for the nurses at the clinic, and also a box of 3 for myself (in addition to the box of 6 I haven’t finished from yesterday lol). I’m gonna miss living 5 mins away on foot from a cupcake slash cheesecake store…………better for my waistline though.

Then I went on a massive shopping spree at Lafayette’s food market, and also various macarons stores like PH, LadurĂ©e and Sadaharu Aoki around the Grand Magasins area. Also bought some cheese for my family as a souvenir. The cheese guy at Lafayette was so nice. But I also made a gaffe haha…I asked him if Tomme was similar to Swiss cheese, and he gave me the nastiest glare and said “NON!!! C’est FRANCAIS!!!! Pas suisse, nos fromages sont FRANCAIS!” Heh…sorry. Hurt his French pride. I sated him by buying some Tomme AffinĂ©e, Beaufort de Savoie, and Camembert. He also let me try a lot of cheese before buying…he gave me HUGE (like, 3X4 INCH) pieces to try. I was so full after trying lol.

This was my appetizer. Let’s just say tarts are not Berko’s fortĂ©…the tart base wasn’t buttery enough and I would’ve preferred more filling. Of course, it’s not fair to judge them based on a mini-tart I guess. The coconut and mango cupcake was yummerz!!! And I don’t even like coconut.

Today I planned to wake up early to head down to the Louvre before going to Versailles (yes again) to watch an equestrian performance at the Grand Ecurie. Unfortunately, I’m just not one for waking up early and I woke up at 8:45, which would mean huge line-ups at the Louvre, especially since it’s Easter. I was planning to go to Sunday mass at Notre Dame at 10, and I didn’t think I would make it if I went to the Louvre. So I headed out for some early morning wandering instead…

Le Pain Quotidien is a chain store selling organic breads in “naturally” decorated cafĂ©s with lots of wood panelling, communal wooden tables, and lots of bread. But that’s not what made me happy. I ordered a croissant au beurre for here, and what was ON the table made me happiest. ALL YOU CAN SPREAD spreads!!! They had Brunette (hazelnut butter), Noisella (nutella dupe but organic), Blondie (white chocolate spread), Noir (dark chocolate spread), and various jams, but who cares about jams when you have unlimited chocolate spreads? Ok, just kidding, their cherry jam was excellent paired with the dark chocolate spread. So, for 2.20 euros, I had a croissant as a side dish to my million different kinds of spreads. And also went through my guidebook (which I only started reading today. Yes, my last week. lol) trying to decide where to go.

I decided I would head over to the Île de la CitĂ© a bit earlier in case there were lines at Notre Dame, and thank god I did, as the lines were SNAKING. Ah spring break. Fortunately, I got into the cathedral just as the Gregorian mass was about to start, and attended my first mass in…many years (not since I switched high schools from a Catholic one to a secular one I believe). It was calming, and I must admit I sort of missed it. 🙂 Not to mention the venue was gorgeous and it’s breathtaking to imagine mass a few hundred years ago here. The picture above is of the English mass, after the Gregorian mass, which I snapped as I was leaving.

My next stop was the Bastille market across the street from the OpĂ©ra Bastille, a starkingly modern structure in contrast to everything else in Paris. I actually read about the market in the guidebook this morning, and I’m glad I did. Or else, I would’ve missed the chance to experience an outdoor market!

It was bustling and lively. There were stalls selling all kinds of things: raw meats, rotisserie, fresh oysters, Breton specialties, North African goodies, Greek deli items, Italian stalls, cheap clothing, shoes, fruits, vegetables, Chinese food, Bob the Paella guy (I think it’s a franchise), breads, LOTS of cheese, Portuguese food, and street musicians. Oh, and underwear. Yea. Kinda reminded me of ć„łäșșèĄ—, except the food they sell is a lot classier.

I had to go to fnac to pick up tickets for my trip to Versailles on Sunday. I decided to go to a fnac in the 6th just so I could drop by Patisserie Sadaharu Aoki. Aoki is probably the only Asian patissier who is famous worldwide. I don’t know why he hasn’t decided to open a store in Hong Kong yet. 😩 We are soooo deprived in HK.

I bought 2 pastries…to be revealed later. 😉 The salesgirl working at the counter spoke only Japanese! :O The cashier (who was also Japanese) did speak French though. I think it’s a nice move by Aoki to hire Japanese 🙂

School until 6 pm today as the last case was late by half an hour x_x Thankfully one of the nurses made crepes, so I snuck into the pantry now and then to munch on some crepes! I saw some speculoos spread in the pantry that morning, but unfortunately by the time I snuck into the pantry, the spread was all gone.

Today I stayed in the operating theatre, and there weren’t that many so I got off early again. Off to Rue Montorgueil for food hunting! I had already bought something special from Carl Marletti earlier for dessert.

First stop was Eric Kayser for a baguette as I had only tried their petit pains before. I got a demi-baguette Monge, their most famous baguette. I was lucky to get one still warm!! Obviously, I had to start eating it as soon as I got out. It was soooooooo good. The crust was crunchy rather than brittle, the innards were fluffy, chewy but not too chewy, and made even better by the fact that it was warm. I had to stop myself from finishing off the whole thing before I got home.

Next stop is probably the most popular cheese shop on Rue Montorgueil. Every time I pass by there’s a huge line. I got something to go with my baguette.

This is the pasteurized version of munster. I actually wanted the unpasteurized one, but they only sell it by quarters, and I didn’t want that much, so I settled for this. I’ve never had munster before. The rind is very sticky, which I’m told is a good sign that it’s ripe. The rind is thin, not like the thick rind of brie. HMm..2 words to describe this cheese: VERY stinky. My hand brushed against it and it remained stinky for a while even after washing my hands. The interior was soft, but not runny. The bottom had a 1 cm layer of extra-soft, extra-stinky cheese which was saltier with crunchy bits…salt? I really liked it and I actually ate the whole demi-baguette with this cheese. SO FULL I feel like I ate an elephant. Recurring theme in my blog? Nonetheless…on to dessert.

All over Paris

As I write this, I’m massaging my thighs, as I walked all around Paris in not so great flats and my thighs are cramping up. It was so worth it though. I took a ton of pictures, which you can see in the slideshow at the bottom. This post will contain a few highlights only. It IS a little picture heavy though.

When I woke up, I rushed to HurĂ© to get my first (!!) croissant of my stay in Paris. Unfortunately, although I tried to get there early, it wasn’t warm anymore. It was still quite good though..apparently they’ve won some sort of award or something for their croissant au beurre. Interesting to note also, is that they have croissant au beurre and a normal croissant. Maybe I have to do a taste test between the two one of these days..no picture because I devoured it on the way home.

I then headed out to a beautiful day in Paris. I walked to the Notre Dame first. There were a ton of people, but the line to get in was pretty quick. I spent around 30 minutes in there. Everything is so huge, it’s hard to imagine how they built it back in the 14th century without any modern technology.

After Notre Dame, I walked through the Ile de la CitĂ© and Ile Ste Louis. Both are quaint little islands which remind me of Granville Island – swarmed with tourists and filled with little trendy boutiques. Also, on Ile Ste Louis, one can find the best ice cream in Paris – Berthillon.

It was very smooth indeed, and I enjoyed it. Around the same price, but much better than the local “gelato” shops we can find in Hong Kong. It didn’t leave you thirsty either! After having my ice cream, I walked to the Place des Vosges, which is the oldest planned square in Paris. Built by King Henri IV in the 17th century, it’s now filled with locals sunbathing or having picnics, as well as children playing. I love this little park and wish HK had parks like these.

Victor Hugo also lived at the Place des Vosges at one time, and I went into his apartment on the second floor for a tour a few days later.
